I'd never seen the woman in the long red dress before, but somehow I knew exactly who she was. I cursed and checked the shielding on my mind.

“That’s right. Protect yourself, wizard. It won’t do you any good, but it does make it more fun for me.” Lilium grinned like someone had just served her favorite dessert.

Firrag exhaled smoke from her perch on Ved’s shoulder. Salty pressed her body against my ankle and growled.

Nigel stepped forward. “Perhaps we could leave them—”

Lilium twirled a hand and pointed it in Nigel’s direction, cutting him off as though she’d wrapped her fingers around his throat. “Perhaps you should have thought of that before you defied me.”

Nigel choked. Brianne lunged forward to help, then froze like she’d hit a wall.

“No heroics, Fae,” Lilium sneered at Brianne. “Or I will banish him.”

Morgan stuck her hands into the pockets of her signature black jeans and strolled over to intercept me and Ved. I wasn’t sure if the gesture was meant to reassure us, or if she was really that relaxed about having Nigel’s evil mother in her house. Unless she’d arranged for this. Which meant I’d invited Nigel right into her trap. Oh, no.

Morgan must have understood the look of horror on my face, because she shrugged. “Sorry, not sorry?”

My fists clenched and my water magic surged as I lunged toward her. “You monster. How could you?”

Ved’s hand clamped down on my shoulder, holding me back.

Morgan shook her head. “See. I knew it. You think I’m a monster. And there you were just yesterday trying to make me believe that I could have come to you. Trusted you. That you would have accepted me and tried to help me.”

“I would have. It didn’t have to be like this.” I nearly growled the words at her as I tried to channel my power and debated who to attack first.

Morgan shrugged. “Yes, it did. You would have been just like my brother. Trying to save me. He didn’t understand, either.”

“And Lilium does?” I asked, glancing over to where Nigel’s mother stood, grinning.

“Oh, I do.” The self-appointed Demon Queen wrapped her magic around Nigel and Brianne so she could pull them along in her wake as she sauntered closer. “Morgan is the daughter I never had. And so much more loyal than my true offspring turned out to be.”

Lilium hooked a finger under Morgan’s chin and turned Morgan’s face up toward her own. She looked at Morgan with pride. “She’s managed to bring you all here, just for me: my traitor son so he could be punished; one of the wizards who stole my boxes from me and knows where they’re being hidden; and two Fae to drain for their magic, which will help us defeat their own kin.”

Salty growled but her body had started shaking.

“Is that the little faerie dog? Muffin, is it? Come to Mama, Muffin.” Lilium curled a finger at Salty to draw her from my side, but Salty didn’t budge.

The pleasant look on Lilium’s face turned dark.
