I'd never seen the woman in the long red dress before, but somehow I knew exactly who she was. I cursed and checked the shielding on my mind.
âThatâs right. Protect yourself, wizard. It wonât do you any good, but it does make it more fun for me.â Lilium grinned like someone had just served her favorite dessert.
Firrag exhaled smoke from her perch on Vedâs shoulder. Salty pressed her body against my ankle and growled.
Nigel stepped forward. âPerhaps we could leave themââ
Lilium twirled a hand and pointed it in Nigelâs direction, cutting him off as though sheâd wrapped her fingers around his throat. âPerhaps you should have thought of that before you defied me.â
Nigel choked. Brianne lunged forward to help, then froze like sheâd hit a wall.
âNo heroics, Fae,â Lilium sneered at Brianne. âOr I will banish him.â
Morgan stuck her hands into the pockets of her signature black jeans and strolled over to intercept me and Ved. I wasnât sure if the gesture was meant to reassure us, or if she was really that relaxed about having Nigelâs evil mother in her house. Unless sheâd arranged for this. Which meant Iâd invited Nigel right into her trap. Oh, no.
Morgan must have understood the look of horror on my face, because she shrugged. âSorry, not sorry?â
My fists clenched and my water magic surged as I lunged toward her. âYou monster. How could you?â
Vedâs hand clamped down on my shoulder, holding me back.
Morgan shook her head. âSee. I knew it. You think Iâm a monster. And there you were just yesterday trying to make me believe that I could have come to you. Trusted you. That you would have accepted me and tried to help me.â
âI would have. It didnât have to be like this.â I nearly growled the words at her as I tried to channel my power and debated who to attack first.
Morgan shrugged. âYes, it did. You would have been just like my brother. Trying to save me. He didnât understand, either.â
âAnd Lilium does?â I asked, glancing over to where Nigelâs mother stood, grinning.
âOh, I do.â The self-appointed Demon Queen wrapped her magic around Nigel and Brianne so she could pull them along in her wake as she sauntered closer. âMorgan is the daughter I never had. And so much more loyal than my true offspring turned out to be.â
Lilium hooked a finger under Morganâs chin and turned Morganâs face up toward her own. She looked at Morgan with pride. âSheâs managed to bring you all here, just for me: my traitor son so he could be punished; one of the wizards who stole my boxes from me and knows where theyâre being hidden; and two Fae to drain for their magic, which will help us defeat their own kin.â
Salty growled but her body had started shaking.
âIs that the little faerie dog? Muffin, is it? Come to Mama, Muffin.â Lilium curled a finger at Salty to draw her from my side, but Salty didnât budge.
The pleasant look on Liliumâs face turned dark.
